All Together Now by Gill Hornby

By Sophia Whitfield

Gill Hornby’s All Together Now is the perfect book to curl up with on your winter break. Following the success of her debut novel, The Hive, Hornby has penned another witty and charming book.

Set in the small town of Bridgeford, All Together Now follows an eclectic community who have all slightly lost their way. Bennett’s wife has just left him after he is made redundant, Lewis cares for his wheelchair bound daughter and Tracey is hiding behind her cool ageing rock star persona.

Dependable Annie is well known in the community. When she realises the choir needs more members she sets about, in her officious way, drawing in new members. She picks Tracey up every choir practice so she doesn’t have to ‘get the car out’, drops the hint to Bennett’s ex-wife knowing exactly what will follow and entices young Jazzy, who sees her voice as her way out of waitressing in the Bridgeford cafe, to join the choir.

Together they work towards winning the county championships. Despite themselves Annie’s motley crew find they rather enjoy their new activity. Always on the peripheries of the local community, Bennett and Tracey soon become actively involved, even to the point of petitioning against a new superstore that threatens their idyllic high street.

A heart-warming novel that may even entice you to join a local pop choir. Pharrell Williams’ Happy anyone? All together now ...
