Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after two years of marriage and twelve years together.

Jolie’s attorney Robert Offer said “Jolie has filed for dissolution of marriage. The decision was made for the health of the family."

It is understood she is requesting full custody of their six children: Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 15, Pax Jolie-Pitt, 12, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, 11, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox Jolie-Pitt and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.

Pitt was previously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston. He filed for divorce six months after filming Mr & Mrs Smith with Jolie. At the time Aniston described Jolie’s comments on her relationship with Brad Pitt as “really uncool”.

It will be Jolie’s third divorce, she was previously married to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.

Jolie is well known for her humanitarian work but has had numerous health issues. In 2013 she underwent a mastectomy after testing positive to developing breast cancer. Two years later she had her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed as a preventative measure against cancer. Pitt applauded her for her decision.

“It was just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter, and she was doing it for the kids, and she was doing it for her family so we could be together.”

The announcement comes less than a year after the couple branded ‘Brangelina’ filmed By the Sea together. The film, directed by Jolie, depicted a couple in trouble.
