Debora Krizak launched into professional musical theatre in 2004 after being offered a role in Mel Brooks’ The Producers where she also understudied the role of Swedish secretary, Ulla. From there she went on to appear in Titanic – a new musical for Seabiscuit Productions playing the role of Madame Aubert and then was invited to be a walk in cover to Rhonda Burchmore in Respect the Musical.
Giving birth to twins has not slowed Debora down. In 2008, she was back on stage in GFO’s stage adaptation of the movie Calendar Girls, where she played the role of Elaine. Debora’s most recent and notable credits include playing the role of Sheila in the 2012 Helpmann Award winning musical A Chorus Line, for which she was nominated for numerous awards including a Helpmann for Best Supporting Actress, Sydney Theatre and GLUG awards. In 2014, Debora played the dual roles of Nickie and Ursula in Hayes Theatre Company’s debut production of Sweet Charity, under the direction of Dean Bryant and Andrew Hallsworth, earning her another Helpmann nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Most recently, Debora performed the national anthem for the Ashes Test Series, televised worldwide. Debora can be seen performing the role of Erma in Cole Porter's Anything Goes. The dazzling musical is playing in Brisbane before moving to the Sydney Opera House on September 5. We were delighted that Debora was able to join us for a chat.
What is your favourite musical?
I'm obsessed with the new broadway recording of PIPPIN so I'd say that would be my fave at the moment.
The films you enjoy …
I'm terrible at remembering the films I've watched... Im actually a documentary nerd. I'm obsessed with SBS on demand. Don't judge me.
After a long day you listen to …
Pandora easy listening. I like not knowing what's coming on next and I like that I can rate the songs according to my liking. I may or may not be a little bit of a control freak.
The best things in your life right now …
When my kids join me on tour. Other than doing 8 shows a week, I'm very busy taking them on daily outings and enjoying being all together. I'm also very grateful for having a job I love and wonderful family and some pretty amazing girlfriends who inspire me daily.
Tell us about your role in Anything Goes?
I play ERMA. She's a gangsters moll. She's typically assumed to be a dumb blonde but I play her a little more street wise and she has a great song at the end of act 2 with a bunch of sailors which sums her up perfectly - Buddie Beware! She knows what she wants and where she wants to go. Not always in the most conventional of ways either. She's naughty, flirty and fun to play. I love a character with a bit of a wicked streak. Mix that with glamour and you have wonderful scope to play with. And I get to do exactly that every night!
