With the release of Disclaimer Renee Knight joins the ranks of successful Faber Academy ‘Writing A Novel’ course graduates. In her thrilling debut Knight sets the scene for a visual, compelling read that has unsurprisingly already been picked up by Hollywood.
Catherine is a successful documentary maker. Her only son, Nicholas, is 25 and has recently moved out of home allowing her and her husband to downsize to a flat.
She was never confident in her role as a mother. She suffered form postnatal depression and although she didn’t need to she went back to work when Nick was still young. Her husband Robert is a successful lawyer and together they have made a content life for themselves.
Their son has not turned out exactly how they had hoped. He works in the electrical department at John Lewis, which was not the aspiration his two high achieving parents had for him. Catherine is convinced that Nick’s departure from home is a step in the right direction – a step towards independence.
But when a book appears in Catherine’s home it threatens to reveal a secret she has kept for years. The disclaimer in the book that states ‘any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental’ has a red line through it.
When she begins to read the novel Catherine is horrified to discover that the book has been written about her, and although her name has been altered she knows the story, a story she has shared with no one. The contents of the book could very well unravel the life she has built for herself.
A gripping thriller with an ingenious plot.
