By Sophia Whitfield
From the author of The Silver Linings Playbook and The Perks of Being a Wallflower comes this powerful coming of age novel from Matthew Quick.

Nanette O’Hare is a teenager with a comfortable lifestyle. Her mother is an interior designer and together with her father they all live in a beautifully furnished home. Nanette ticks all the boxes for her parents; she is an excellent student, a star athlete and a good daughter. But when her teacher Mr Graves lends Nanette his battered copy of the cult classic The Bubblegum Reaper, the rebel in her is awakened.

Her friendship with her closest friend is threatened and untrue rumours about her persist throughout the school. She befriends reclusive author Nigel Booker, the author of the battered tome she now holds dear and looks to him for guidance instead of her parents. He introduces her to Alex, a troubled young poet, and they promptly fall in love, anchored together by their feelings of displacement in a world that makes little sense to them. But rebellion comes at a cost and Nanette finds things begin to get a little more complicated than she bargained for.

This is a novel for lovers of John Green and Young Adult fiction. It’s gritty and powerful in addressing the dark business of being a teenager. Buy the book in Australia here and in the UK here.
