Starring Steve Carrel, Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde and Alan Arkin, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone tells the tale of two famous Las Vegas magicians (Carrel and Buscemi) fighting to stay relevant amidst the growing popularity of an outrageous street magician (Carrey).
Directed by Don Scardino (30 Rock), The Incredible Burt Wonderstone will keep you giggling throughout its duration. Steve Carrel is fantastic as the egotistical and arrogant Burt Wonderstone and Jim Carrey is well-cast as the intense Criss Angel-inspired street magician, Steve Gray.
The screenplay, written by four people - Jonathan M. Goldstein, Tyler Mitchell, Chad Kultgen and John Francis Daley Ė does well to impart a humour that is refreshing and also incorporates a tone which sets the movie apart from your typical Hollywood comedy. The screenwriters and Scardino include quite a few smart jibes and jokes (if you blink youíll miss them, or if you are still too busy laughing at the previous joke) that could do well to make The Incredible Burt Wonderstone a cult favourite.
Despite this, the movie falls prey to a formulaic plot which keeps it from being uproariously hilarious. The comedy could have gone that extra mile further, with perhaps some extended improv between Carrey and Carrel, to break loose the bonds of the script which at times seems a tad constricting to the comedic and improve geniuses that are Jim Carrey and Steve Carrel.
Overall I give The Incredible Burt Wonderstone a 3.5 out of 5. With such great comedic actors the movie should have been uproariously hilarious rather than just hilarious. It is great to see Jim Carrey (who hasnít done a true comedy since 2008ís Yes Man) back on the screen. His slapstick along with the rubbery body movements and facial expressions he is so famous for were a true delight to see once again.
