Based on the bestselling novel by Jonathan Tropper, This Is Where I Leave You stars Jason Bateman, Tina Fey and Jane Fonda.
The film opens as radio producer Judd (played by Jason Bateman) discovers that his wife is having an affair. Soon after, he is called by his sister (Tina Fey) with the news that his father has died.
Jane Fonda leads the ensemble cast as matriarch Hilary Altman. She conveniently uses her husbandís death to gather her four grown children together forcing them to stay in the family home for seven days.
Dysfunctional family members and their assorted spouses gather together to mourn their loss. All four siblings have their own complications that come with adulthood. Only the eldest son has stayed close to his parents, the rest have all left behind their old familial ties. Now, back again, they begin to reconnect with family and former childhood friends. Chaos and hysteria ensue as matriarch Hilary, a former therapist, shares details of her life her children would rather not hear.
With similar themes to August: Osage County and The Family Stone, both featuring strong matriarchs, this is an enjoyable film. Full of humour and heartache it is the cast that makes the film entertaining.
This Is Where I Leave You is released in Australian cinemas today.
