Netflix has bought the rights to J.G. Ballard's Hello America. the 1981 sci-fi novel will be produced by Ridley Scott.
Ballard's novel Empire of the Sun was directed by Stephen Spielberg and starred John Malkovich, Nigel Havers and Miranda Richardson. His most recent novel is the bestseller Cocaine Nights.
Hello America begins a century after the energy crisis of the late twentieth-century America has been abandoned, and a small group of European explorers return to the deserted continent. But America is unrecognisable - the Bering Strait has been dammed and the whole continent has become a desert, populated by isolated natives and the bizarre remnants of a disintegrated culture. The expedition sets off from Manhattan on a cross-continent journey, through Holiday Inns and abandoned theme parks, to uncover a shocking new power in the heart of Las Vegas.
