Two biopics have been announced at the Cannes Film Festival.

Noomi Rapace will play American-born Greek opera singer Maria Callas, one of the greatest divas of all time. The film will focus on the two decade affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis which ended in 1968 after he met Jacqueline Kennedy. Rapace rose to fame when she played Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Natalie Portman is set to play Jackie Kennedy in a film that pays tribute to Jackie Kennedy’s courage in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination. The film reunites Portman with Darren Aronofsky, who directed her Oscar-winning performance in the thriller Black Swan. Aronofsky has signed up as a producer.

We take a look back at five previous biopics, some more successful than other.
