For every moment in life there is a perfect Winnie the Pooh quote. So many children have grown up on the stories and famous characters from Winnie-the-Pooh. Now we can look forward to a new character. Joining Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger is Penguin.
He will feature in a new book to celebrate 90 years since Winnie-the-Pooh was published. The Penguin character was created by Brian Sibley and was based on a photograph of A.A. Milne playing with his son Christopher Robin with a penguin and a bear. Penguin will make his first appearance in Sibley’s Winter story, which will feature in Winnie the Pooh, The Best Bear in the World to be published in October.
Sibley shared his reasons for choosing a penguin as Pooh’s companion. “While pondering what other toys Christopher Robin might have owned but which were never written about, I remembered seeing a photograph of father and son playing on the nursery for with Winnie-the-Pooh and a penguin. The thought of Pooh encountering a penguin seemed no more outlandish than his meeting a kangaroo and a tiger in a Sussex wood, so I started thinking about what might have happened if, on a rather snowy day, Penguin had found his way to Pooh corner.”
Mark Burgess has illustrated the new character in the style of the original illustrator E H Shepard. Burgess recently illustrated, with much success, Return to the Hundred-Acre Wood.
As well as ‘Winter’, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Best Bear in All the World also features three other stories: Autumn, Spring and Summer, written by Paul Bright, Jeanne Willis and Kate Saunders.
