Continuing our London literary series this week, British author Tamar Cohen selects a contemporary book in which the river Thames plays a central role.

Tamar Cohen was born in 1963 in Nigeria. After an American Studies degree at Manchester University, she went on to become a freelance journalist and has written for The Times, The Telegraph, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and numerous other publications. Tamar, her partner and three teenage children live in north London with Spanish rescue dog, Toffee. The Mistress’s Revenge, Tamar’s debut novel, was published in June 2011 and her second novel The War of the Wives has just been released in the UK and will be released in Australia in September.

Tamar selected Tideline by Penny Hancock

I’ve just finished reading this richly atmospheric, evocative novel, set in South East London on the banks of the Thames at Greenwich. It’s a claustrophobic thriller in which the river itself becomes the most important character – dark, dangerous, beguiling and murky with secrets.
